Grand Marais DNR fish researcher takes over Finland office, which includes some 200 BWCA lakes

Matt Weberg is the new fisheries supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources at their Finland office. He started at the Finland office in January.

Prior to taking over the leadership role at the Finland DNR office, Weberg worked as a fisheries biologist out of the Grand Marais for the past decade. He served as the interim fisheries supervisor at the Grand Marais office following the retirement of Steve Persons in May 2022. Most recently, Weberg worked as the assitant fisheries supervisor for the DNR in Grand Marais.

Weberg takes over the Finland office following the transfer of Dean Paron to a new role in fisheries management for the DNR. Paron left the Finland office in June 2023 to oversee habitat work on all rivers and streams in Minnesota as part of his new role with the DNR. Paron is now working out of the DNR’s office in Duluth in his new position with the agency.

During his time working in Grand Marias, Weberg worked extensviely with lake trout in some of the coldwater lakes in and around the BWCA. Weberg said he will continue to do work with both stream trout and lake trout in Lake County.

Weberg spoke with Joe Friedrichs from Paddle and Portage about what 2024 has in store for the Finland fisheries office.
