June continues to be a busy month for search and rescue operations in and around the Boundary Waters. Two groups in Lake County requested assistance inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness during the first full week of June. A group of Boy Scouts and their trip leader capsized on Basswood Lake June 4, according to Lake County officials. Another group needed rescue assistance on Malberg Lake in the BWCA two days later. Nobody was seriously injured in either situation.
Those search and rescue operations came just days after the conclusion of the recovery mission for two missing canoeists at Curtain Falls in St. Louis County in the BWCA. The situation was reported on extensively across Minnesota. A celebration of life for Reis Grams will take place June 11 in the Twin Cities area.
In other news from the canoe-country wilderness, wildlife sightings are happening consistently and abundantly from Ely to the Gunflint Trail. Moose calves, adult moose, and black bears are all being seen routinely across the region. Cow moose (adult females) with calves can be dangerous and aggressive. Read here of a 2014 moose attack on a Minnesota man near Ely and the BWCA.
