Wildfire in BWCA Wilderness Nearly 30 Acres as Firefighters Continue to Make Progress

High humidity levels helped firefighters make progress over the weekend on a wildfire burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The Wood Lake fire near Ely, believed to be started by human activity, was 25 percent contained as of Sunday morning, a news release from the U.S. Forest Service said.
As previously reported by Paddle and Portage, the fire was discovered the morning of Sept. 10 on an island on Wood Lake in the BWCA Wilderness. The fire led to the closure of a popular entry point on the lake as well as several nearby lakes and portages.
“Firefighters made good progress yesterday with higher humidity levels, continuing to reinforce the fire’s containment line,” the Forest Service said in news release over the weekend. Additional fire crews are Connecticut are now on site to assist with the fire, according to the news release.
The origins of the wildfire remain under investigation. Officials from Superior National Forest are seeking any information about how the fire started.
A separate, smaller fire burning near Burntside Lake outside of the BWCA Wilderness near Ely was being “mopped-up” over the weekend.
“Minnesota DNR and Superior National Forest firefighters are on site continuing mop-up with assistance from the Morse-Fall Lake Fire Department. Crews will monitor the area for the next several days,” according to a news release from the Forest Service.
