The 2024 Camping Symposium Celebrates All Things Winter

The 2024 Winter Camping Symposium runs from Oct. 24-27. It’s a place to learn about, and celebrate, all things winter camping. The event is held at YMCA Camp Miller near Sturgeon Lake and Moose Lake, not far from Interstate 35.

This year’s keynote speakers at the annual event are Paddle and Portage contributor and canoe-country guide Pam Wright, along with Bear Paulsen, a paddling and winter camping legend in the Boundary Waters region, and beyond.

The reality is, winter camping is something many visitors to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are curious about, but not all are willing to actually try it out.

And that’s understandable. There’s an assortment of gear most don’t own, and even renting it can be intimidating. And then, of course, there’s the cold. Winter in Minnesota is no joke. It can be deadly cold here. So, why learn how to winter camp safely and efficiently?

Enter, the Winter Camping Symposium.

This is where the magic of the winter season comes alive, the event organizers say.

“Our goal is to inspire, educate, and celebrate everything winter with fellow campers and enthusiasts from all around the region” the event organizers say. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect, collaborate, and learn from one another, making this event an absolute must for anyone passionate about outdoor winter activities.”

Joe Friedrichs spoke with one of the event organizers for this year’s Winter Camping Symposium, Pete Brautigam, to learn more about the 2024 event. Audio above.
