Campfire Ban Enacted in Quetico as Wildfires Burn and Dry Conditions Persist

By Joe Friedrichs
Campfires in Quetico Provincial Park and across a large swath of northwest Ontario will temporarily be banned starting Friday, May 16.
Campfires will no longer be allowed at this time due to dry conditions across the landscape and the risk of wildfires. The campfire ban goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

In addition to Quetico, campfires are largely banned across an area west of Thunder Bay and down to the U.S. border, to an area extending west to the Manitoba border. This includes all of Quetico and Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.
Under campfire bans, the use of a camp stove solely fueled by liquid petroleum or propane is still allowed.
There is currently not a campfire ban in place for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or anywhere on Superior National Forest. A series of wildfires continue to burn in northeastern Minnesota.
A large wildfire is also burning at this time in Ontario just north of Quetico.
Quetico sits just across the border from the BWCA in Ontario. It can be accessed from lakes at the end of the Gunflint Trail, namely Saganaga Lake, as well as other lakes on the Ely side of the wilderness.
