Helicopter Rescues Two BWCA Paddlers After They Capsize

By Joe Friedrichs

May 19, 2026

Two experienced paddlers attempted to travel across the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in May 2026. Unlike many people who attempt such a feat, Riley Smith and Andrew Lokke were doing so without traveling the more traditional border lakes route.

Rather, Riley and Andrew wanted to take several days paddling smaller lakes, traveling across the interior of the BWCA. At a section of the Kawishiwi River in the BWCA, Riley and Andrew’s trip came to an abrupt end. They capsized, the result of high water and waves. They were able to reach out for help using a cell phone. That helped arrived nearly six hours later in the form of a helicopter.

Riley shares the full story in this discussion with Joe Friedrichs from the Paddle & Portage Podcast.
