BWCA Fishing Could Be ‘Extraordinary’ During Opening Weekend Following Mild Winter
The Great Fishing Opener is Saturday, May 11 in Minnesota this year, including most of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The ice left early this year from most lakes across the BWCA. The walleye spawn will be over on most lakes across the wilderness, and lake trout should remain in the shallows.
The fishing this year could be extraordinary across the BWCA on the opening weekend, according to local fisheries managers who work near the BWCA.
Paddle and Portage spoke with Grand Marais Area Fisheries Supervisor EJ Isaac about the 2024 Fishing Opener in the BWCA.
