Too many wolves and not enough mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
These were two themes brought to the forefront of Congress this week at the urging of U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, who represents all of northeastern Minnesota, including the BWCA. Stauber-sponsored legislation, including the “Trust the Science Act” and the “Superior National Forest Restoration Act,” advanced through the House. Both bills now head to the Senate. The likelihood of either bill becoming law this year is slim, with the Superior National Forest Restoration Act having essentially no chance of advancing beyond the Senate, or the desk of President Joe Biden.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Superior National Forest Restoration Act bill on a 212-203 vote April 30, one day before the quota season starts for overnight permits in the BWCA.
