July 24, 2026

Hansi Johnson is a Duluth resident who frequents the BWCA and Quetico.

Joe from the Paddle & Portage Podcast talks with him about the ongoing BWCA closure for overnight paddling, fly fishing across the canoe-country wilderness, and where the Boundary Waters ranks as a world-class fishery.

In BWCA news this week, day use on some parts of the East side of the wilderness starts Monday, July 27.

This includes Pine Lake. Brule. Sawbill. Cross Bay. Poplar Lake area. Duncan. Ram.  And many other entry points and lakes open for day use only.
All overnight BWCA permits remain canceled through Wednesday, July 29.
