Canoe Season Arrives to the Boundary Waters

The ice is gone. Bugs are starting to appear. Signs of bears roaming the woods are happening on a regular basis. The great Fishing Opener nears.

Canoe season has arrived to the Boundary Waters.

In the next issue of the Paddle and Portage digital magazine, we’ll capture the leadup to the 2024 paddling season. Erica Dischino is a photojournalist and documentary photographer based in Duluth. She recently ventured up the Gunflint Trail and met with a number of businesses to document how they are preparing for the upcoming season.

The busy season for outfitters, resorts, and outdoor recreation operations along the Gunflint Trail and over toward Ely is typically May through September, though it can vary year to year. This unusually warm winter allowed many of these businesses to begin preparing for visitors earlier than before.

Included in this article are several of Erica’s photos that will be included in the May issue of the magazine. There are many more pictures to share. The magazine is available for P&P members May 20. Become a member today to have access to every issue of the digital magazine.
