BOUNDARY WATERS – I have owned just one dog in my life. He was with me for nearly 17 years.
My wife and I got the Labrador puppy from our friend Mary. In the 1980s we shared an old resort on the shore of Grouse Lake near Isabella, Minn., in the heart of Superior National Forest. The entire Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness sits inside Superior National Forest.
Mary and her husband lived in a cabin a few feet from the water’s edge. My wife, Kay, and I lived in the main resort house. Rent was $50 per month. We heated the old house with wood collected from the national forest. Squirrels lived in the attic and mice on the main floor. The roof leaked. We financed our simple lives working seasonal jobs with the Forest Service.
